The home to the famous, royal and
incredibly rich Scindhia family, Gwalior, was once called as the " key
to Indostan" by Warren Hastings. The glorious past of Gwalior gives it
a unique and timeless appeal. This the very land where swords matched rugged
forts and ruthless ambition tested death. Gwalior was the birth place of
many dynasties each leaving its own indelible mark over the city. The
magnificent rock-carvings, temples and palaces makes the place worth
visiting.

Ibn Batuta, an Arab traveller was very
true when he described Gwalior as a ' fine town of white hewn stone'. There
are many tourist spots in Gwalior-
The Gwalior Fort - Gwalior Fort is one of the most
magnificent monument of Gwalior. It has been the witness to many
imprisonments, battles and jauhars. Of the many Hindu dynasties that ruled
Gwalior, the Kachhwahas and Tomars contributed the most to its culture and
architecture. Out of three entrances to the fort only two are accessible
today. There are many impressive structures inside the fort-

Two famous temples inside the fort
Saas-Bahu complex - Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the Saas-
Bahu temple complex was built in the 11th century.
Teli Ka Mandir - The 100 ft tall Teli Ka Mandir was
built in the 9th century. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and has
unique architectural style.
Mausoleum Of Sheikh Muhammad Ghaus -This spectacular
structure was built during Akbar's rule. Built on a square plan, with
hexagonal towers and flanked on four sides with delicate stone lattices, it
appears to float on air despite its large size.
Jai Vilas Palace - It was built during the reign of
Jiyagi Rao. The palace is three storeys high and is decorated with Tuscan,
Italianate and Corinthian coloumns. The palace also houses a museum that
displays among other paraphernalia the much talked about silver dinning
train used to ferry champagne bottles around the table.
The Sun Temple - This temple is newly constructed
and is located near the Residency at Morar. The temple takes its inspiration
from the famous Konark Sun Temple in Orissa.
The Gwalior School Of Music - This school is famous for
its successful adaptation of folk music to classical standards and for
creating a new musical mode called dhrupad, which subsequently acquired
popularity with Tansen.
The Gujari Mahal Archaeological Museum - This museum is a
paradise for various rare antiques, some of them as old as 1st century.
The Kala Vithika - This is another treasure house of the
arts.
Gwalior Zoo - In this zoo some of the rare species of
Indian wildlife are kept in natural surroundings.

Shopping in Gwalior is a fabulous experience. One can
buy authentic items carrying royal splendour. You can choose from a range of
art and craft items like lacquer ware, dolls, handwoven carpets, wall
hangings and jewellery. Gwalior is also very famous for its Chanderi sarees.
Chowk at Bara is famous for chanderi sarees.
State Government run Emporiums - The emporium has a fascinating collection
of arts and crafts of Madhya Pradesh from dokra figurines and tribal
jewellery to hand-woven sarees .

Climate Graphs
The city of Gwalior experiences an extreme type of
climate. There is a changing temperature throughout the year with each
passing season. In summer the temperature can go as high as 42 'C and during
the summer season the temperature can drop up to the 4 'C.
